Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is Ving Tsun? Is it the same as Wing Chun?

Yes — Ving Tsun, Wing Chun, and Wing Tsun are three different spellings of the same Southern Chinese martial art. The art was made world-famous by Grandmaster Ip Man (Yip Man), who was Bruce Lee's primary kung fu teacher. We teach the Moy Yat / Moy Tung lineage of Ving Tsun — one of the most complete and authentic Ip Man lineages active in the United States today.

Q2. Do I need any experience to start kung fu?

No. Our 6-Week Beginner's Program is designed for adults with zero martial arts background. The system is built on natural body mechanics, not athletic prerequisites. Most new students take their first Intro Lesson without ever having thrown a punch before.

Q3. How much does it cost to start?

Your first class is a $15 Intro Lesson — a 30-minute, hands-on, semi-private session with one of our certified instructors. This lets you experience real Ving Tsun training before deciding if it's right for you. Full membership pricing is provided during the Intro Lesson. We do not require long-term contracts.

Q4. Is Ving Tsun good for real-world self-defense?

Yes — that is exactly what the system was designed for. Ving Tsun was developed for practical self-defense, not sport or competition. There are no forms competitions, no point sparring, and no scoring rules. Every technique is built around close-range efficiency, centerline control, and the principle that a smaller person should be able to overcome a bigger, stronger opponent.

Q5. Where is Kung Fu Downriver located?

We are located at 22805 Goddard Road, Taylor, MI 48180, inside the Taylor Recreation Center. We are easily accessible from I-75, I-94, US-24, and M-39 (Southfield Freeway). Our students drive from Southgate, Lincoln Park, Allen Park, Wyandotte, Riverview, Trenton, Woodhaven, Brownstown, Romulus, Melvindale, Dearborn Heights, and other Downriver communities.

Q6. Is this a veteran-owned school?

Yes. Kung Fu Downriver was founded in 2015 by Sifu Randy, a U.S. Army veteran. The school is veteran-owned and operated, and we welcome current military, veterans, and first responders. We are also the official Downriver branch of the Detroit Kung Fu Academy.

Q7. Do you teach children?

Our program is focused on adult students 18 and up. We do not currently run a children's program at the Downriver location. For family inquiries, the Detroit Kung Fu Academy network includes other locations — contact us and we can help you find the right fit.

Q8. How often should I train?

We recommend three times a week for steady progress. Our class schedule (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday evenings and Saturday mornings) is designed to support that frequency. New students start with one-hour classes and progress into the standard two-hour class format as their skills develop.

Q9. What should I wear to my first class?

Comfortable workout clothing — anything you would wear to a gym is fine. No uniform is required for the Intro Lesson. Most students train barefoot or in wrestling shoes. No prior gear is needed for your first visit.

Q10. What style of kung fu is this — and how is it different from karate or BJJ?

Ving Tsun is a Southern Chinese kung fu system focused on close-range striking, simultaneous attack and defense, and economy of motion. Unlike karate, which emphasizes long-range linear strikes and katas, Ving Tsun works at conversation distance with relaxed, redirective movement. Unlike BJJ, which focuses on ground fighting and submissions, Ving Tsun stays on the feet and is designed to neutralize a threat as quickly as possible. The system is sometimes called 'the thinking person's martial art' because it relies on strategy, sensitivity, and structure rather than strength or athleticism.

Q11. Who is Sifu Randy? What is his background?

Sifu Randy is the founder and head instructor of Kung Fu Downriver. He is a U.S. Army veteran with over 20 years of martial arts training. Before founding the school in 2015, he trained under two 10th Degree Grandmasters until their passing — Grandmaster Joe Onopa (founder of Kwan Bop Do) and Grandmaster Delfort Fort (founder of Yochin Ryu). He is currently a student of Sifu Lung Yat Tung of the Detroit Kung Fu Academy, in the direct Moy Yat / Moy Tung lineage descending from Grandmaster Ip Man.

Q12. How long does it take to learn Ving Tsun?

Basic self-defense applications begin to feel natural within the first few months of consistent training. The complete Ving Tsun system — the three empty-hand forms (Siu Lim Tao, Chum Kiu, Biu Jee), the Wooden Dummy form (Mook Jong), Chi Sao (sticky hands), and the weapons (Eight-Cut Knives and Six-and-a-Half Point Pole) — is a multi-year journey. Most students find that what makes Ving Tsun special is not how fast it can be learned, but how deeply it can be understood.
